Brookfieldin (1987, Developing critical thinkers) mukaan kriittisen sosiaalitieteen tarkoituksena on

1) identifying and challenging assumptions behind ordinary ways of perceiving, conceiving, and acting;

2) recognizing the influence of history, culture, and social positioning on beliefs and actions;

3) imaging and exploring extraordinary alternatives, ones that may disrupt motives and established orders;

4) being appropriately sceptical about any knowledge or solution that claims to be the only truth or alternative.
